* My League numbers come from the list of Leagues I have. I spent the first half of 2005 emailing Leagues asking for their number of members. I received responses from 59 out of the 146 that I have on the list including all (I think) of the large ones with more than 800 members. The list originally came from the UPA with additions that I made. If you assume a low/high range of 150-275 players per League that did not respond, then the total number of League players is about 40,000-50,000; and I added another 5,000 at the high end for Leagues that I don’t know about. Many Leagues have multiple sessions (summer, fall, etc.), so if the same person plays in more than one session, our totals are high since I added the numbers from each session to get the League’s total membership which means some double counting. And if some League members are also UPA members, the numbers are high since they are double counted.
** I have a list of 17 youth Leagues totaling about 2,400 members. I arbitrarily increased the numbers shown since I don't know how many youth Leagues exist that are not on my list. The list originally came from the UPA with a few additions that I made. Keep in mind as the UPA membership number includes 2,200 youth members, the total youth players in the U.S. would be the youth League number shown plus 2,200.
*** I have no idea how many college Intramural Ultimate players there are in the U.S. So I guessed. Here is a comment from a Carleton IM player about how many IM players are also UPA members:
“Hard to say. Over the last four years there have usually been 4 open and 2 women’s teams from Carleton that have competed in the college series (probably about 125 players). As a rough estimate, I would say that those players account for about 25% of IM players at Carleton.”
